Lacquer, Rhinoceros Skin, Raden – rediscover those classic pens in a whole new premium way.

The Beauty of Lacquerware

An ancient craft that began to take shape as early as the Neolithic era, lacquerware holds the same significance in the East as sculpture does in hellas.Crafted from all-natural materials, lacquerware branches into several styles depending on the specific design. The vermillion lacquer shown in the image is one of the most common solid-colored finishes. Much like the association between the Byzantine Empire and the color purple, vermillion red symbolized the authority and majesty of the royal family in ancient Chinese dynasties.

  • All-natural materials

Lacquerware is made by coating the surface of a material with the sap of the Chineselacquertree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum). When the lacquer (urushi) hardens, it polymerizes and forms a protective surface that repels water and resists corrosion. And today, we creatively apply it to fountain pens, pen holders, pen sleeves, jewelry, wood carvings, and folding fans.

  • A Long History

In China, the properties of lacquer have been known and utilized since the Neolithic period. Over centuries, from the Shang and Zhou dynasties through to the Ming and Qing dynasties, lacquerware craftsmanship advanced significantly, reaching impressive artistic and technical heights. Chinese techniques such as "qiangjin" (engraving with gold) and "miaojin" (gold painting) have had a profound influence on neighboring countries, including Japan. Lacquerware represents a significant achievement in both chemical technology and decorative arts in ancient China.

  • Versatility

The versatility of lacquerware lies in its unique qualities, distinguishing it from other ancient artifacts. It embodies three essential traits: inclusiveness, practicality, and ornamentation. Once lacquer is applied to various objects (such as different base materials), they all become lacquerware. These items gain moisture resistance, insect resistance, and anti-corrosion properties. Additionally, pigments can be mixed into the lacquer, and through the artisan’s carving and painting, each piece transforms into a work of art.

Raden the Pinnacle of Biogenic Gemstones

Originating around 1000 BCETo be precise, raden does not refer to a single type of shell but rather the craft of inlaying various types of biogenic gemstones into wooden lacquerware. Today, it is no longer limited to a few traditional freshwater shells. From New Zealand’s Haliotis and China’s Pinctada imbricata to Australia’s Pteria penguin and Polynesia’s Pinctada margaritifera, we are innovators of the raden technique. While preserving the excellence of traditional craftsmanship, we actively embrace and utilize the finest materials from around the world to provide our customers with perfect works of art.
