Pilot Custom 743, crafted with a barrel made from Desert Ironwood, is now available in stock. (Also compatible with Pilot 742)

The Arizona Sunrise is not just a writing instrument, it's an ode to the enduring beauty of the desert and the artistry of nature itself. Crafted from Olneya tesota wood, commonly known as Desert Ironwood, this fountain pen is a testament to both the rarity and resilience of one of the world’s most exceptional woods.

A Wood Like No Other

Olneya tesota grows in the harshest regions of the Southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, where it faces extreme temperatures and the dry, unforgiving conditions of the Sonoran Desert. Despite this, it thrives, developing a dense, durable wood that is as striking as it is functional. Desert Ironwood is one of the heaviest woods in the world, with a density so high that it sinks in water. Its remarkable hardness (with a Janka hardness rating of 3,260 lbf) makes it incredibly challenging to work with, but this very challenge is what gives it its unique allure.

Each Arizona Sunrise pen is carefully crafted to bring out the natural beauty of the wood—its stunning, one-of-a-kind grain patterns, deep hues, and polished finish. The wood's natural gloss, achieved through meticulous hand-polishing, requires no wax, making it feel almost glass-like to the touch. The finish is smooth and luminous, reflecting light in a way that’s nothing short of mesmerizing.

A Rare Find

Due to the harsh growing conditions and the tree's slow growth, Desert Ironwood is an exceedingly rare material, with only about 5% of a tree’s wood being suitable for use. Every piece of Arizona Sunrise is a limited-edition masterpiece, with each pen reflecting the natural imperfections and distinctive character of its origin. The tree’s irregular growth, shaped by wind, disease, or animal damage, contributes to the wood’s unique appearance, giving each pen its own story to tell.

Nature and Craftsmanship United

Owning the Arizona Sunrise isn't just about getting a fancy pen—it's about holding a piece of the desert’s history. It’s about valuing the rarity of Desert Ironwood and reveling in its transformation into a beautiful mix of nature’s splendor and human creativity.

Please enjoy its desert charm!
