This handcrafted piece exemplifies the artistry of traditional Japanese maki-e lacquer work. The foundation is carefully coated with a deep black lacquer, giving it a timeless, elegant backdrop. Incorporated into this design is nashiji —a sprinkling of fine gold powder—adding subtle, shimmering accents throughout the surface, much like a scattering of stardust.
For decorative elements, luminous shell inlays (Sazae Shell) are used, enhancing the design with their iridescent glow. The craftsmanship shines through the intricate maki-e detailing, which artfully depicts twisting grapevines. Each vine is rendered with meticulous attention, reflecting the natural flow and organic curves of the plant. Grapevines, often associated with abundance and vitality, are a symbolic motif that complements the piece’s luxurious feel.
This pen body is not just a writing instrument but a small masterpiece of functional art. Its bespoke nature ensures that no two pieces are identical, appealing to collectors and connoisseurs who seek uniqueness and heritage craftsmanship. Perfectly blending aesthetic beauty with utility, this custom design offers a harmonious fusion of traditional materials and modern sensibility.
Mother-of-pearl inlay (Raden) is a decorative technique that uses the iridescent inner layer of abalone shell, turban shell, pearl oyster shell, or other mollusk shells. Mother-of-pearl inlay is divided into two categories depending on the thickness of the shell inlay. Thin shell inlays (usugai, or aogai) have a thickness of less than 0.1 millimeter and are created by sanding down the shell or boiling it and peeling the layers apart. Materials such as gold or silver can be applied to the back of the shell to add color or luster in a technique known as urazaishiki (“back coloring”).Thick shell inlays (atsugai) are flat shells that have been sanded to a thickness of approximately 1 millimeter. The special beauty of mother-of-pearl inlays comes from the contrast between the jewel-like luster of the shells and the deep tones of the lacquer.
